Perseverance: The Technique You Can’t Learn in One Class

🥋

There’s a moment every martial arts student experiences:

A technique just isn’t working.

You’ve watched the demonstration. You’ve tried it again and again. The person next to you seems to have picked it up already…and you’re still struggling.

That moment is where some of the most important training begins.

Martial arts teaches us that struggling with something doesn’t mean we’re bad at it. It usually means we’re still learning it.

🥋 Courage Is Taking the Next Step

Courage doesn't always look dramatic.

Sometimes courage is walking into your first martial arts class when you feel nervous.

Sometimes it's attempting a technique you find difficult.

Sometimes it's sparring with someone more experienced, putting yourself forward for grading, or simply getting back up after making a mistake.

At Chi Combat System, we want our students to understand something important:

Being courageous doesn't mean you aren't afraid. It means you don't allow fear to make the decision for you.

🥋 Small Goals. Big Results.

It's easy to look at a black belt and think about how far away it seems.

But every black belt started exactly where every beginner startswith a single lesson.

The secret to long-term success isn't setting huge goals. It's achieving small goals consistently.

This week, don't focus on the next belt.

Focus on your next improvement.

It could be: 🎯 Landing your hand technique with better accuracy. 🦵 Improving your leg technique with better balance. 🥋 Remembering your pattern without hesitation. 💨 Moving quicker during speed drills. 🧠 Staying focused from the first minute of class to the last. 🤝 Being the teammate who encourages everyone else.

When someone earns a new belt, it's easy to see the colour.

What people don't see are the hours of practice, the corrections, the moments of frustration, and the determination it took to get there.

A belt isn't just a reward it's a symbol of the person you're becoming.

At Chi Combat System, every belt represents growth in:

  • 🥋 Skill – Learning new techniques and improving old ones.

  • 🧠 Mindset – Staying calm, focused, and willing to learn.

🥋 Confidence Is Built... Not Given

One of the biggest myths is that confidence comes before action.

At Chi Combat System, we teach the opposite.

Confidence is built every time you:✅ Step onto the mats, even when you're nervous.✅ Try a technique you've never done before.✅ Get something wrong and keep going.✅ Help a teammate improve.✅ Show up when you don't feel like it.

Every lesson is another brick in the foundation of confidence.

Parents, remember that your child doesn't need to be the loudest or the strongest to succeed. The greatest growth often comes from the student who quietly keeps turning up, listening, and giving their best.

Students, don't compare yourself to the person next to you. Compare yourself to the person you were last month. Progress is the real victory.

🥋 CCS Kids – Word of the Month: Motivation 💪

This month at Chi Combat System, we are focusing on Motivation, helping students understand how to push themselves, stay consistent, and keep going even when something feels challenging.

Motivation isn’t just about feeling excited. It’s about building small daily habits that lead to confidence and progress.

Here are a few simple ways you can help motivate your child at home:

Praise effort, not just results

Instead of “Well done for winning,” try “I’m proud of how hard you worked.”
